An outdoor painting of the sunrise from my favourite spot - an elevated grassy bank round the back of Broughty Castle looking out to the North Sea. Painting the dawn is not the warmest of experiences, except in summer: in winter, sitting still for so long can be absolutely baltic. If an artist is daft enough to persevere, it’s good training as they’ll soon learn to get the essential tones and colours and the composition established quickly before any bits drop off
