Landscape Painting Commission, Sunset Sky Painting Commission December 2010

Commission Dec. 2010   75x90cm   Oil Painting on Canvas                                           Commissioned work

With permission, I quote an e-mail from the new owner of this work....

Hi Ken,
I’m so lucky to have it!  Opened it last night with relatives here, stapled it up on the wall in the art studio, and we all just stared at it amazed.
I can’t pick an area that is my favorite because I have too many…those yellow streaks of light, those deep purple/blue/orange areas, the ground (and you said the ground is usually not interesting….in this one it is…).
Don’t you miss it?
I couldn’t be happier – but I almost feel guilty having such a wonderful piece in my house!

Some day your paintings will be in museums, I am sure.
Thank you so much –
My Best,
Ann

In discussing the brief for this landscape painting commission of a sunset sky with the client who is also an artist I realised that, in this work I would have the freedom to push the intensity of colour and luminosity that I can obtain with oil paint to the limit. Based on an amalgam of two earlier paintings of a sunset sky - The Dimming of the Day and Sunshine of the Light of Letters this work uses a full range of tones from the darkest to the lightest possible as well as every colour of the rainbow in various places and strengths. Basically, it was great fun to paint!

For those with an interest in the “painting of a painting”, I photographed each stage of this commission while it was being painted and a link to this progression can be found at the top of the Methods page
