Backlit clouds from high ground north of Alyth. It’s taken a while to build up the light in this work, painting into the boundary between highlight and midtone with layer after layer of paint, letting them dry before starting again. I think of this process almost as sculpting light, using paint and brushmarks to carve shape into the cloudforms. By necessity this becomes studio work and can’t be hurried but the idea of creating the illusion of strong light within a landscape painting has always fascinated me, so it’s worth it.
