Sky painting from Broughty Ferry Castle

Just about to do a last quick pencil drawing of the basic composition of the sky just before leaving.

Painting from Broughty Ferry castle

This was the first view as I arrived to paint. There was a strongly defined sky, the shapes suggesting that the wind, blowing away from me, was drawing out long ribbons of cloud which all looked like they were pointing down to a vanishing point on the horizon.

Dawn and painting it. Castle Green, Broughty Ferry

In all likelihood the linear clouds are all parallel to each other and the apparent convergence is due to perspective and the great height of these clouds within a high pressure system....

Sketching the sunrise at Broughty Castle

...but that’s a bit analytical and I’m here to paint the sky after all, not to rabbit on about it.

Dawn at Castle Green, Broughty Ferry

I do like it when the geometry combines with all the colours and light like this though. It almost paints itself. I’m certainly not stuck for incentive here.

2 reasonable beginnings to go home with. Both “moments” have passed for each painting and the sky has moved on. I don’t want to do any more to either of them or they (and I) will get hopelessly confused.  Still, if I’d been fishing this morning instead of painting I’d be coming back with two trout...!

You can’t eat paintings for breakfast though....

....wonder what seagulls taste like?
